The Montgomery County Planning Board has approved the sketch plan for an apartment building and townhomes on Chevy Chase Lake Drive.

The plan would convert the current site of 68 garden apartments just off of Connecticut Avenue, into a 175-unit apartment building and 70 townhouses. The property owner, the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County (HOC), is working with EYA, a regional residential developer, on the project.

The plan was approved at Thursday’s planning board meeting, along with the conditions stipulated by planning staff. Those include:

  • Providing moderately priced units in the apartment building (20 percent of the units) and townhomes (15 percent)
  • Limiting the height of the apartment building to 100 feet and the townhomes to 50 feet
  • Putting a process in place to work with the Department of Parks on finalizing the details and ownership of the park that’s planned for the project

This is the first project approved by the planning board under the new Chevy Chase Lake Sector Plan, which allows increased development in the area ahead of the Purple Line being constructed. There are plans for a Purple Line station to abut this development.
