A young girl was injured in an incident at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center Tuesday afternoon, according to the Rockville Police Department.

Lt. Eric Over told Bethesda Beat Tuesday afternoon that police are in the initial stages of their investigation. He said police believe the girl, who is between 8 and 12, dove off the diving board and “then appeared to have some time type of distress” around 3:15 p.m.

He said the lifeguard immediately came to her assistance and that emergency workers were called to the scene. The girl was transported to Shady Grove Hospital and was scheduled to be airlifted to Children’s National Medical Center. Over said the girl’s flight was delayed initially because she wasn’t stable enough to be transported.

The Rockville Swim and Fitness Center is located at 355 Martins Lane. The outdoor pool has one meter and three meter diving boards, according to the swim center’s website.

Rockville spokeswoman, Marylou Berg, said she did not have any updates on the girl's condition Wednesday morning.
