John Jennings, who helped launch the career of Mary Chapin Carpenter, is fighting kidney cancer.

Musicians from the D.C. area will gather Sunday at Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club to perform in a benefit concert for well-known Potomac musician and producer John Jennings.

Jennings produced local celebrity Mary Chapin Carpenter’s first album in 1986 and her 1992 album Come On Come On. Jennigs also produced Chapin’s country hit “Down at the Twist and Shout,” which refers to a former Bethesda nightclub, The Twist and Shout, which Chapin frequented.

Jennings is battling metastatic kidney cancer, and proceeds from the benefit concert will be donated to his medical fund.

“We know he can play amazing guitar licks,” Carpenter wrote in a post on a website raising funds for Jennings. “We know he writes deeply beautiful songs. We know he knows his way around a recording studio. And that he plays every instrument within it as well. … What may not be as well known is the courage and strength he is mustering to face the health challenges in front of him now.”

The concert will feature Eddie from Ohio, John Carroll, The Mary Ann Redmond Band, Mike Cotter, Bill Holland & The Rent’s Due Band, Big Yankee Dollar, The Patty Reese Band, The Hanson Brothers, Robbie Magruder, Rico Petrucelli and more.

The show starts at 6 p.m. and tickets are $25.
