New Silver Spring Brewery Opens with Picnic Today

Denizens Brewing Co. will open its beer garden as the business works to complete its full-service restaurant and brewery

Denizens Brewing Co. in Silver Spring will open its doors to the public for the first time this afternoon.

The East West Highway brewery and restaurant hasn’t fully completed construction, but with the nice weather expected over the next few days, the owners decided the timing was right.

“When we saw Thursday, Friday and Saturday a high of 81, we said let’s do it,” said Taylor Barnes, the director of marketing for Denizens.

Today’s plan is to host a picnic in the beer garden; guests can bring their own food and buy draft beers from the restaurant.

The outdoor beer garden seats about 150 at picnic tables. Denizens will offer its own Southside Rye IPA, as well as four other draft beers from Brewer’s Art, Star Hill, Devil’s Backbone and Allagash Brewing, for $6.50 each. The Southside is currently being brewed under contract at Beltway Brewing Company in Sterling, Va.

Barnes said the owners plan to open the full-service restaurant, which will be run by the BBQ Bus food truck owners, in early August and hope to have the brewery running by August as well so they can start serving beer brewed there by September.

The business has a license that allows it to serve beer without food thanks to a new state law that went into effect this year.

“We worked to change the law,” Barnes said. “It changed in such a way that we can serve beer on-site with no food minimum.”

Denizens had a soft opening over the weekend for residents of East West Highway as well as for families of staff, but Wednesday will be its first official day open to the public at 1115 East West Highway.

After tonight’s picnic the business will be open from 3 to 11 p.m. weekdays and 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. during the weekend, according to Barnes.

Once fully open, Denizens Brewing Co. will be the largest brewery operation in Montgomery County, capable of brewing 1,500 to 2,000 barrels of beer per year. The business is owned by Silver Spring residents Emily Bruno, Julie Verratti and Jeff Ramirez.
