After Dispute, Owner Agrees to Keep Popular Market, Restaurants Open on Sundays

Owner now interested in renegotiating lease for Potomac businesses

Jeff Grolig, the owner of River Falls Market, Renato’s and The Tavern at River Falls figured that closing the popular Potomac establishments on Sundays would give his employees a much-needed day off, so he closed all three Potomac establishments on July 6.

But after being being told by his landlord that closing on Sundays violated the terms of his lease—and being served with an eviction notice—Grolig changed his mind.

“We were declaring our Independence,” Grolig said. But after talking with his attorneys, Grolig realized that he’ll have to renegotiate his lease, which still has 6 years left, before he can close on Sundays.

“It would be a great day for employees to be off,” Grolig said. “It would give them time to regroup.”

He said it made sense to him to close on Sunday because none of the markets’ vendors make deliveries on that day. River Falls Market at 10124 River Road is known for its selection of fresh fish and prepared foods.Renato’s and the Tavern at River Falls are full-service restaurants adjacent to the market.

The landlord for the property, Zuckerman Gravely, was not available for comment.
