The man who was stabbed multiple times in a Silver Spring apartment building has succumbed to his injuries, police said Wednesday.

Police have now charged Ulises A. Blanco-Melgar, 31, of Hyattsville with first-degree murder and assault in the case. He is currently in custody. Police identified the victim as Tomas Herrera Batres, 49, of 8200 Piney Branch Road. Batres died on Monday from injuries sustained in the June 19 assault, police said.

Blanco-Melgar was arrested near the scene of the incident, which happened near Batres’ address on Piney Branch Road, after a witness followed him in a vehicle as he fled the scene, according to police.

Police said the homicide is the 11th of the year in Montgomery County, three more than in all of 2013. Last year’s low total was somewhat unusual. There were 15 homicides in 2012, 16 in 2011, 15 in 2010 and 37 in 2009.
