A Hyattsville man who was arrested hiding in a Kensington shed following a nearby bank robbery has been charged in four bank robberies.

Police said they located Jose Mercedes, 45, shortly after responding to a bank robbery call at M&T Bank at 10420 Montgomery Ave. around 4:39 p.m. in Kensington on Monday. Police said Mercedes was found hiding in a shed on McComas Avenue and officers located a money bag and other evidence nearby.

Police say Mercedes entered the bank, passed a note to the teller implying he had a weapon and demanded money. After the robbery, police tracked down Mercedes with the help of K9 officers and said they found money from the bank inside his pockets.

Mercedes admitted to three other bank robberies during questioning, according to police. He was charged in the following cases:

  • An M&T Bank robbery on Dec. 26, 2013 at 7920 Norfolk Avenue in Bethesda
  • A Wells Fargo Bank robbery on March 1 at 9812 Falls Road in Potomac
