Bethesda-area theaters won a total of six Helen Hayes Awards Monday night, with Round House Theatre leading the way with three awards.
Round House won all three awards for its production of “Glengarry Glenn Ross,” Dave Mament’s Pulitzer Prize winning play. Round House received awards for “Outstanding Ensemble Play;” “Outstanding Director, Resident Play” (Mitchel Hebert); and the “Robert Prosky Award for Outstanding Lead Actor “(Rick Foucheux).
“This year we were nominated for eight awards and won three,” said Ryan Rilette, producing artistic director at Round House. “That’s more nominations than we received in the past five years combined and the first time we’ve won three awards since 2005.”
Olney Theatre Center won two Helen Hayes Awards for its production of “A Chorus Line.” The musical won for “Outstanding Resident Musical” and for “Outstanding Lead Actress, Resident Musical” (Jessica Vaccaro).
Imagination Stage, the children’s theater in Bethesda, won in the category “Outstanding Production, Theatre for Young Audiences” for its production of “Anime Momotaro.”
This was the 30th anniversary of the Helen Hayes Awards. The awards ceremony was held at the National Building Museum.
