From hot dogs to homemade doughnuts: Bold Bite, Bethesda’s specialty hot dog shop, is branching out again. Last year, co-owner and well-honed chef Alonso Roche starting selling hamburgers, and today, February 10, he’s adding breakfast. And we’re not just talking scrambled eggs.
Roche, whose first job in his native Venezuela was as a pastry assistant at a French restaurant, also baked a lot of breads while working at eateries in Spain. “I have a pastry background,” says Roche. “And I love doughnuts.”
So he’ll be starting breakfast with a few varieties of homemade yeast doughnuts—probably one with a butter glaze, another filled with a Nutella pastry cream. In addition, look for egg sandwiches on hot dog-shaped brioche buns, but even better, Roche will be stuffing the same fillings (eggs and cheese with bacon, half-smokes or chorizo) into arepas (cornmeal pockets).
Breakfast starts at 8 a.m. 4901-B Fairmont Ave.., 301-951-2653, www.boldbitenet.
