UPDATE: Water Main Break Closes Bethesda Avenue

November 6, 2013 5:02 p.m.

An apparent water main break has shut down one of Bethesda’s busiest areas.

The break became evident just before 5 p.m. on Bethesda Avenue, in the middle of downtown’s Bethesda Row section.

Police shut down the road between Woodmont Avenue and Arlington Road, causing traffic backups on Arlington.

WSSC spokesperson Kira Calm Lewis said an inspector is on the way to the scene. WSSC doesn’t know the extent of the break, but Lewis said the pipe under Bethesda Avenue is eight inches in diameter.

Water is flowing quickly from a number of leaks in the middle of the road.
