Second Waste Pick-Up Company Has Workers’ Strike – About 70 workers with Laurel-based Unity Disposal and Recycling went on strike Tuesday morning after they claimed the company fired a worker who argued for union representation. It’s the second recent strike by workers at a county-contracted waste pick-up company. In September, workers at Potomac Disposal went on a three-day strike. The county is conducting an audit of that company’s pay. County-hired firms are required to pay the county’s living wage of $13.65 an hour. The Unity strike on Tuesday delayed pick-up for about 13,600 homes, some in the Bethesda area. [The Gazette]
Purple Line Vote Will Wait – The Maryland Board of Public Works was supposed to vote Wednesday on the state’s plan for a public-private partnership to build and operate the Purple Line. That vote has been pushed back to Nov. 6 because the Maryland Department of Transportation is “taking a little more time to craft the solicitation,” according to a spokesperson. The Board of Public Works is made up of the governor, the comptroller and the state treasurer. MDOT hopes to issue a request for qualifications with the decision. [Washington Post]
