UPDATED: Traffic Lights Down, Out At Old Georgetown Road

August 24, 2013 7:56 p.m.

UPDATE 11:50 a.m. Monday A traffic signal pole fell on a busy Bethesda roadway on Saturday.

Montgomery County spokesperson Esther Bowring said the pole, at the east side of the intersection of Old Georgetown Road, Arlington Road and Wilson Lane, was at least 30 years old. Bowring said she heard the pole rusted out, but that the State Highway Administration would know the exact reason the structure fell.

The SHA is responsible for the maintenance of the pole. Montgomery County crews put up a temporary poll and strung new traffic signals on it to get traffic moving again on Saturday.

The downed batch of traffic lights meant a modified traffic pattern on Saturday evening at the intersection.

The pole support of the lights and road signs at the east end of the intersection toppled over sometime on Saturday.

There was no access to St Elmo Avenue and all traffic at the intersection stopped at a flashing red light.
