With several of his faithful pony friends, white blaze pony “DW” returned to offer for rides for the third year in a row at the RCNS Yellow Balloon Fair on April 27. Like the ponies, many visitors returned for another year to this quiet little springtime fair nestled in the woods. There they enjoyed the moon bounce, swings, and friendly old-fashioned games. Homemade cake pops and oatmeal sandwiches, cotton candy and popcorn tempted hungry children at the bake sale booth. Inside, a slyly funny face painter nestled in the corner of the room as books beckoned with promises of stories to read aloud with a loving parent, and benefit auction shopping kept the parents hoping for a great win. Outside again, even those too big to hop on board had to stop for a moment to watch the pony rides in the sunny meadow, if only to see the joyful yet nervous faces of their little novice riders.
Parents at Rockville Community Nursery School have cooperatively planned and run this festive event for 34 consecutive years. Volunteers from Kohl’s, M&T Bank, i9 Sports, Studio Booseh, RCNS alumn families and several area high schools were on hand again this year to assist the current RCNS parent team in welcoming the happy crowds. In addition, many local and national businesses donated services and goods to the YBF Silent Auction. Their generous support and that of visitors to the Yellow Balloon Fair is greatly appreciated by this little parent-owned preschool.
Proceeds from the Yellow Balloon Fair and its accompanying Silent Auction each year directly benefit parent involvement in early childhood education: all proceeds raised support programming and tuition at Rockville Community Nursery School, a parent-participation preschool in the heart of Rockville since 1964.
