YMCA Healthy Kids Day

Kids get a jump start on summer with fun activities and games

April 30, 2013 11:57 a.m.

During the summer, many children lose exposure to out-of-school activities that keep their minds and bodies active. Research shows that children gain weight two to three times faster during summer vacation than during the school year. The YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day this Saturday was the perfect opportunity for kids to get a jump on a summer full of activities—from fun physical activities to healthy snacks to summer reading—that will keep them growing and achieving.

Healthy Kids Day is the nation’s largest health day for families. This free community event took place at YMCA Bethesda-Chevy Chase, welcoming 290 kids, teens and adults. The sun was shining and the smiles were infectious. With help of the Y’s volunteers and partners (Suburban Hospital, BCC Fire Department, Chik-fil-A, and Huntington Learning Center), parents and their kids enjoyed a day filled with bonding, active play and educational fun. There were obstacle course challenges on the lawn, friendly soccer games, a petting zoo (the live turkey and bunny rabbit were fan favorites), healthy snacks at the “Create your own trail mix” station, face painting, a rock climbing wall, and much more. YMCA Ayrlawn’s gymnastics team gave an energizing performance with tumbles and splits.
