Education

Silver Spring is part of Montgomery County Public Schools’ Downcounty Consortium, which includes five high schools and their feeder elementary and middle schools. Each high school offers distinctive academic programs. Admission outside a student’s home school is generally based on a lottery for each school. Students are guaranteed to get into their home school if it is their first choice, or if it’s their second choice and they don’t get into their first-choice school.

Students can test into Montgomery Blair High School’s Math/Science/Computer Science magnet program and Communication Arts Program, Albert Einstein High School’s Visual Arts Center, and Richard Montgomery’s International Baccalaureate (IB) magnet program. Students have to fill out a detailed application for a spot in the Leadership Training Institute (LTI) at John F. Kennedy High School.
