Henry Haller, former White House Chef, has been a member at the local YMCA on Old Georgetown Road for 25 years and on Thursday, January 10, 2013, they celebrated his 90th birthday.
A group of staff and members gathered to wish him Happy Birthday and surprised him with balloons, a banner and well-wishers when he walked through the front doors.
Henry comes to the Y three days a week and spends as much time in social conversation as he does exercising.
YMCA Bethesda-Chevy Chase Vice President of Operations Carla Larrick was on-hand to greet Henry and present him with a plaque in honor of his birthday. Just last year Henry spoke at a local Rotary Club meeting about his love of the Y and why he’s remained a member for so many years.
As a former White House Chef serving under five former Presidents (Johnson through Regan), Henry also loves to talk food and share recipes. He’s even regaled the staff with stories of famous people he and his wife have entertained for dinner, such as Julia Child and her husband.
