Spanish chain heading to Elm Street

October 25, 2012 2:50 p.m.

100 Montaditos, an international chain, will be opening its first Maryland location in the old Green Papaya space on Bethesda Row.

The chain, founded in 2000 in Andalusia, Spain, has more than 250 restaurants in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Colombia and the U.S. Its American restaurants are so far all in Florida.

True to its namesake, the fast-casual restaurant offers 100 different filling combinations for its montaditos, which are tapa-sized sandwiches made on crunchy white, whole wheat or ciabatta rolls. Ingredient combinations include Serrano ham and fresh tomatoes; grilled chicken and Iberico cheese, and shrimp with guacamole.

The restaurant also offers Spanish ham and cheese platters, salads and a few appetizers such as Spanish olives and spicy brava potatoes.

Federal Realty, which owns Bethesda Row, estimates the restaurant should open in four to six months.
