You may have heard that Pepe, the sleek, silvery food truck serving up Jose Andres’ signature Spanish sandwiches was coming soon to Montgomery County. It’s been tooling around downtown D.C. since March.
We got the scoop on next week’s schedule, so make your lunch plans accordingly. The truck usually serves from 11:30 a.m. to around 2 p.m.
Note that other than the location in front of Jaleo, specifics on the other spots will obviously depend on parking. To find out exact locations each day, go to www.facebook.com/pepefoodtruck or www.twitter.com/pepefoodtruck. A set schedule of the truck’s whereabouts will be released in November.
As far as next week goes:
Tuesday, October 9: In front of Jaleo at 7271 Woodmont Ave. in Bethesda
Wednesday, October 10: Georgia Ave/Silver Spring
Thursday, October 11: Rockledge Drive, North Bethesda
Friday, October 12: Friendship Heights
I checked out Pepe earlier in the week at a downtown lunch gig at Franklin Square, and after sampling four flautas—the thin, elongated sandwiches made with ficelle-like rolls from Panorama Baking Co. in Alexandria, Va.—it’s hard to pick favorites. The ingredients are high quality and well-thought out.
I’d probably go with the Spanish grilled cheese, a combination of Manchego (sheep’s milk), Murcia (goat cheese soaked in red wine), regular Spanish goat cheese, Valdeon (blue cheese), and Membrillo (quince paste). The combination of the crispy Panini-pressed roll encasing melted gooey cheeses, cut with a sweet swipe of Membrillo, is divine.
I also liked the less-rich Futbol Club Barcelona, thinly shaved chicken breast with bacon, lettuce, tomato and shallot mayonnaise (made with Dijon, sherry vinegar and homemade mayo).
Wash it all down with the cinnamon-y and clove-spiked non-alcoholic Sangria, take a siesta and call it a day.
