It will come too late for a weekday commute, when Wisconsin Avenue between the Beltway and downtown can seem like a three-lane parking lot.
But region transit agencies and transportation groups are promoting this Saturday (Sept. 22) as the day to ditch your cars as part of “Car Free Day.”
The North Bethesda Transportation Management District (TMD), created by Montgomery County in 1996 to promote alternatives to drive-alone commuter trips, is one group pushing the effort.
The North Bethesda TMD is funded by a special tax on development north of the Beltway and near Montgomery Mall with the goal of increasing the share of peak period “non-auto” commuters to 39 percent.
That means riding the Metro, biking, hopping on a bus, walking or carpooling. Those participating can stop by the North Bethesda Transportation Center (11806 Rockville Pike) at the Mid-Pike Shopping Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday to enter for a chance to win a Kindle, $200 Metro SmarTrip card and other prizes.
Bethesda Transportation Solutions, which operates the Bethesda Circulator, will have a similar drawing from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the weekly FRESHFARM Farmers Market on Norfolk Avenue.
