Going…Going…Gone!
Bill Frick was being auctioned as a charity “date” at Northwestern University in 1995 when Bethany Medford (“one of the prettiest girls in school”) started bidding on him. She was “someone I certainly would not have had the courage to ask out,” Bill recalls. Soon “Bethany found herself in a bidding war. …My heart was in my throat and I was desperately rooting her on.” Bethany’s winning bid—$100—“was big money to a couple of college kids. …It was the talk of the campus.” Apparently it was money well spent. The Fricks have been married for 10 years. Bill, 37, is a District 16 representative in the Maryland House of Delegates; Bethany, 36, is a senior vice president at Total Wine & More. The Fricks live in Bethesda and have two “Fricklets,” Katie and Charlie. “Having seen Bethany in action many times since, I have learned a relevant fact: This woman is competitive at auctions,” Bill says. “Once she bids, she does not want to lose, whether the ‘lot’ is a gift certificate at the Democratic Central Committee auction or…a future husband.”
