Shoppers get a taste of Sandwich

The boutique opens its second U.S. location at Montgomery Mall

This weekend the Netherlands-based Sandwich women’s boutique held a grand opening party at Westfield Montgomery Mall, complete with a flamenco guitarist, chocolate-covered strawberries and champagne.

The locally owned franchise held a soft opening last month.

“I’m so surprised at how many people come in who know us from our Las Vegas store,” says Sandwich district manager Gregory Lennon. “At least one or two a day.” (Look for the stylish Lennon in this week’s B Chic.)

The second of three U.S. locations (a third recently opened in Bellevue, Wash.), Sandwich aims to keep women fashionable and comfortable, according to store manager Norma Morley. Many women don’t want the low-rise jeans popular with the younger set. “I hear that a lot,” she says. But we don’t want to be frumpy either.

Sandwich finds a solution with classics in a neutral color palette complemented by bright florals and colors—and pants with a higher rise. Here, simple pieces are dressed up with unique details: asymmetrical lines, layered collars and hems, bold pockets, texture and ruching. We liked the fluidity of the fabrics: Most are cotton, linen and silk.

A cotton tee costs $42; a floral maxi is $125. Though Morley says the clothing is targeted to mid-30s-and-above women, the majority of the pieces hold appeal for all ages—and celebrities, too. Gregory pointed out a silk-blend jumpsuit ($159) recently purchased by singer Jennifer Hudson.

Collections are grouped into color palettes making it easy to change a look using coordinating separates and accessories. A short denim jacket over a floral blue maxi says daytime casual; bare shoulders and a big chunky necklace dress it up.

And in case you travelers are wondering what the items may cost in Europe or Asia, don’t worry. The price tags display the prices in a variety of currencies. (Helpful hint: the U.S. dollar amount is listed second-to-last.)

Also celebrating a grand opening on Saturday at the mall was accessories boutique Laila Rowe. Look for a Vera Bradley store to open there soon.
