Just in time for allergy season, Bed Bath & Beyond in the U.S. will soon be carrying Debbie Greenspan’s Dr. Doormat.

Ramping up production to get the mats made in time, the North Bethesda resident says she’s scheduled to ship to the stores by April 20, so the mats should be available by the end of the month—or at least by mid-May. They are also available on her website.

A lifelong allergy sufferer, the North Bethesda resident says she was horrified when she watched her little daughter crawling around on the floor and realized she was playing in a virtual slurry of germs and dirt brought inside on other people’s shoes. Motivated by concern for her children’s health, Greenspan sought a solution to keep the allergens and bacteria out of her house—and her daughter’s mouth.

North Bethesda resident and creator of Dr. Doormat, Debbie Greenspan. After years of trial and error, Greenspan has recently found the winning combination of natural materials—recycled and virgin polypropylene backed by sustainable natural rubber—and a U.S. manufacturer for her creation, Dr. Doormat.

And lest you think you’re safe with your regular doormat think again: “A common doormat is a virtual breeding ground for microbial growth,” Greenspan says. “Everything you’ve collected on your shoes throughout your day is wiped off and deposited onto the doormat which becomes a rich environment for microbes to grow and multiply buy the millions.”

Designed primarily for indoor use, Dr. Doormat is infused with antimicrobials that immobilize the offending microorganisms that are making their way into your home. She says two swipes on the mat do the job. She also notes that animals—particularly cats leaving a litter box—can get cleaned up when they walk over the mat.

Dr. Doormat is machine washable and available in gray, blue, red and brown. The mat costs $26.99 for a 18”x24” mat and $46.99 for the 24” x 36”.
