Crafty ArtSpring Finds a New Home

Arts nonprofit plans to open in Takoma Park on Tuesday

ArtSpring, the nonprofit shop featuring wares made by local artists, is planning a Sept. 27 opening in Takoma Park.

Co-owner Chris DerDerian says that when a restaurant wanted to take over their Ellsworth Avenue location last July, the nonprofit had to leave Silver Spring.

This will be their sixth move since the store originally opened on Georgia Avenue in 2008.

Charlie Pritzer who owns the Airshow recording studio, offered them a place on Westmoreland Avenue. “He was our saving grace,” DerDerian says.

She’s hoping to stay a while, she says—at least until 2013 when the new Silver Spring library is completed. Then the store will occupy the ground floor with the Washington Printmakers Gallery.

“That’s all set,” DerDerian says, though she’s not sure yet if that might become a second location for ArtSpring.

The shop sells the work of local and national artists who create handmade clothing, stationery, jewelry, home goods, children’s items, quilts and much more.

Look for a grand opening celebration sometime in early November.
