Next up in the food truck finds: Rolls on Rolls LLC, a moveable eatery that features kathi (or kati) rolls, a flavor-packed sandwich that’s a staple on the streets of India. Brothers Rachan and Rocky Malhotra are the New Delhi-born cooks who’ve transported their native fast food to the Gulf gas station in Silver Spring; they also offer samosas, biryani and mango lassis.
Rachan, 33, had previously been an IT programmer, and Rocky, 34, was the manager for a medical transcription company. Now they’re cooped up in a metal mobile kitchen all day, chatting with customers, and seem to love it. Their mom, back in India, isn’t overly pleased with their career changes, but is coming around, says Rachan.
As for the food, the samosa got soggy from sitting, but you won’t know the difference after a dip into the emerald green sauce—its lava-like hotness will definitely distract you. As for the kathi roll, the naan bread encloses a generous filling—mine included chicken, grated carrot, red cabbage and spices, a lively change from an everyday lunch sub. The mango lassi, made with nonfat yogurt, went down smooth and silky, extinguishing the heat.
Rolls on Rolls sets up shop from Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Gulf station at the corner of Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.
