Perfect timing: Just as New Year’s resolutions are fading away, along comes Tout de Sweet, a French bakery opening this Saturday, February 19, that promises to be worth every cream puff calorie. Owner and pastry chef Jerome Colin has gotten rave reviews for his previous work at some of Washington’s top hotels.
Is he all set? “There’s always a little bit of stress, but we are going to make it happen,” Colin said earlier this week.
I got a sneak peak of the place at 7831 Woodmont Ave. in Bethesda, and it’s small, sleek and bright, with walls the color of mint chocolate chip ice cream. On opening day, look for French macarons, cupcakes, cream puffs, mousse cakes and pound cakes, as well as breakfast pastries such as croissants, and coffee from the Rockville-based Mayorga company. There’s no seating inside, but when the weather gets warmer, you’ll be able to sip espresso at an outdoor café.
Colin, who lives in Chevy Chase with his wife Sofia (who will be manning the front of the house), will be baking items fresh every morning. On Saturday, the bakery will open at 9 a.m., “but I’ll be here much earlier,” Colin said. Like everyday from now on, he’ll be starting work at 4 a.m.
