In my November 12 blog entry, I wrote about the leaden matzo balls at Uptown Deli, the New York-style delicatessen that recently opened at 7905 Norfolk Ave. in Bethesda. Manager Howard Wasserman later informed me via e-mail that the balls had lightened up and urged me to give them another try. What an improvement! In fact, they’re so airy and fluffy, they tend to break apart—far better, however, than their hockey puck predecessors.
Bubbe’s Old Fashioned Chicken Noodle and Matzo Ball Soup and lots more will be available tonight (December 2) at 6 p.m., when Uptown hosts its first Hanukkah celebration, with candle lighting, songs, potato pancakes, special cookies and dreidel games. Through the end of Hanukkah, the deli will be offering a special holiday menu, featuring latkes with sour cream and applesauce, brisket with gravy, roast chicken and maple-glazed salmon. (Note to Wasserman: I tried the potato pancakes, and while they have possibilities, they need livening up with a little salt, pepper, something! Get Bubbe back!)
