Walt Whitman's principal steps down after 14 years

Alan Goodwin has presided over his final graduation ceremony as principal of Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda. After 14 years in the post, Goodwin is retiring from his job at one of the D.C.-region's highest-performing schools, which has had only three principals since its opening in 1962. During his tenure, Goodwin has led the school to keep up its track record of academic success and has guided the student body through tragedy and hardship. [Washington Post]

Hundreds of firefighters battle blaze at Rockville recycling plant

A blaze raged on Friday and Saturday at a recycling plant in Rockville, drawing hundreds of firefighters to the scene. The fire at Georgetown Paper Stock recycling plant began Friday afternoon, and crews arrived at the scene around 3:30 p.m. to find that piles of cardboard, cloth and other materials were burning. Fire crews remained on the scene through the night. The blaze caused an estimated $100,000 worth of damage. [WTOP]

Post publishes profiles of Krasnow, Elrich, Leventhal

The Washington Post has continued publishing profiles of the Democratic candidates for Montgomery County executive. The paper last week posted articles about three of the candidates, Roger Berliner, David Blair and state Del. Bill Frick (D-Bethesda). Now, profiles of former Rockville mayor Rose Krasnow and County Council members Marc Elrich and George Leventhal are also available. [The Washington Post] 

Silver Spring men die in boating accident on Potomac River

Two Montgomery County men died over the weekend in a boating accident on the Potomac River near Charles County, according to authorities. Police say the boat was found empty and spinning in circles near Cobb Island. Authorities began searching for Eriberto Ferrufino, 47, and Franklin Ferrufino, 43, Saturday night, and divers found their bodies Sunday morning. Both men are from Silver Spring. [WJLA]

High temperatures to start the week

Highs are expected to reach about 94 degrees, with heat value indexes making temperatures feel like 100 degrees on Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Overnight, temperatures will cool to about 77 degrees.
